Woman branded, tortured for failing to bring dowry

Meerut: A woman has alleged that she was tortured in her marital home and even branded by red hot iron rods.

The woman, who goes by the singular name of Renu said that she was beaten up by her husband Rohit, also known as Deepu.

The husband was upset that she had refused to meet his extended dowry demands and had even threatened to leave him.

“After marriage, he started demanding for dowry. He even sent me back home with my father and asked for money. My father gave him Rs.20, 000. Then two months later he started beating me up. On the night of September 15, my husband and his uncle came and lashed while I was sitting on the bed. My husband tied my legs before and then etched them with a hot knife,a” narrated Renu.

Luckily for Renu, her relatives rescued her and brought her to Patiala. The twenty-year-old’s dream of a happy married life has ended within six months of marriage.

The only memories she carries are of regular physical and mental torture for dowry money.

Renu’s aunt, Kamlesh Rani said, “The boy's side should be severly punished. for committing such a grave offence.”

Meanwhile, Renu is back to her parents’ house.
