New Delhi:In the US markets, it was another roller coaster ride for the indices. Stocks rose on Thursday October 23, led by a bounce in energy and health-care stocks. Stocks swung in a seven per cent range and the day's final direction only became clear in the last minutes of trading.
After three attempts at a rally the Dow finally managed to eked out 2 per cent gains in late trade. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 172.04 points to close at 8,691.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained by 1.26 per cent closing at 908.11.
The Nasdaq though shed 11 points as some of the biggest names on the index were pummeled by a weak outlook for the consumer. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at a fresh five-year low at 1,603.91 points a further fall of 0.73 per cent.
The Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500 ) Index gained by 1.26 per cent closing at 908.11.
Crude prices recover and added 1 per cent. Gold prices continue to slide while bonds mostly gain.
Dollar was mixed against other major currencies. Last week's jobless claims were higher than expected.

The Dow advanced 172.04 points, or 2.02 pert cent, to 8,691.25.
The S&P 500 index gained 11.33 points, or 1.26 per cent, to 908.11, and the Nasdaq slipped 11.84 points, or 0.73 per cent, to 1,603.91.
Japan's Nikkei average fell as much as 7 per cent earlier in the session and hit its lowest of 8460.98 points in more than five years.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index touched a low of 13,760.49 points, it is the lowest since April 2005.
Taiwan stocks also went down. The TAIEX share index closed 132.08 points lower at 4,730.51 after touching its lowest point since June 2003.
