HIS POUND OF FLESH: Soren was promised CM-ship of Jharkhand in exchange for supporting UPA during Trust Vote.
New Delhi: With Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Shibu Soren’s deadline to be made the Chief Minister of Jharkhand – a deal he brokered with the UPA in exchange for support – coming to an end, time is running out for Jharkhand CM Madhu Koda.
Koda took charge when Soren was forced to give up his CM-ship following a court verdict against him.
Koda had Soren’s blessings and had publicly announced that he would give up the seat for ‘Guruji’ whenever asked to do so.
But now that Soren wants to rule the state, Koda doesn’t want to give up. This despite a threat by ‘Guruji’ that if Koda does not resign, he would withdraw support to the Jharkhand government
Soren is in no mood to give Koda more time.
“We have been forced to consider our stand due to the kind of politics in Jharkhand,” says Soren.
JMM leaders have already met the Governor but the final decision on withdrawal will only be taken at the party's central committee meeting on Sunday.
At the Centre, it’s a difficult moment for the Congress. It doesn’t want to be seen as being responsible for fall of the Koda government.
But aware that it’s pay back time for the support it received from the JMM during the trust vote, Congress has stated that it will support Soren if he gets a majority.
Soren now wants Congress and RJD to help it get the numbers. But neither Congress nor Lalu are game.
“We’ll have to consider the opinion of all the independents so the decision doesn’t backfire,” says Lalu.
Meanwhile, BJP is watching from the sidelines. Despite having 30 MLAs who could bail Madhu, it would prefer elections in the state.
After all like the UPA, BJP realises that in a politically fragile state like Jharkhand, new alliances can be tricky.
The Congress, which has the support of five JMM MPs at the Centre, has once again realised that running a coalition government is a tightrope walk.
