Hong Kong: The Indonesian search and rescue team faced inhospitable conditions as they spent a second full day looking for the wreckage of a downed Indonesian airliner.
But there is still no sign of the Adam Air Boeing 737-400, which disappeared on Monday afternoon, with 102 passengers and crew on board, including three Americans—a man and his two daughters.
The search area has now been widened and authorities say the jet, which sent out two distress signals about an hour into its two-hour flight, could have come down in the sea.
It's last known contact appears to be just as the jet flew over the southern tip of the remote and rugged Sulawesi island.
It's an increasingly desperate race against time as the anger and frustration among the families and friends of the missing is boiling after false reports tuesday that the crashed plane had been found.
"As part of the rescue team, I apologise for the detailed report which turns out not to be true," Eddy Suyanto of the Indonesian Air Force said.
Government officials say the false information came from a village chief who spoke to local police. The police in turn passed the information up the line.
More ships and planes have been brought in for the search and while there is still hope, rescuers are preparing for the worst.
