Orissa: Three Maoists were arrested in connection with the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Lakshmananda in Kandhamal district of Orissa. Sister Nirmala also says that the Orissa government is finally acting in Kandhamal but her views are not shared by the National Minorities Commission.
Sister Nirmala has been camping in Bhubaneshwar over the past few days to instil confidence among the Christian refugees.
"I think the Orissa government is now acting tough in Kandhamal and I hope this action continues there till normalcy is restored. The people who indulge in violence should be strongly dealt with, they should be given shock treatment so that this is not repeated,” says the Superior General Missionery of Chairty Sister Nirmal.
But her view is not endorsed by the National Minorities Commission. The Commission feels the state government is a mute spectator to the violence against Christians and is hinting that the Centre should act.
“If the state fails to act then it is duty of Centre to act,” says National Commission for Minorities chairman Mohamed Shafi Qureshi.
Meanwhile, the BJP is talking tough. It defends that the Orissa government has warned the Centre against imposing President's rule in the state.
“The stand of the BJP is very clear. Violence in any form is condemnable, and so is selective discrimination without going into facts,” says BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu.
The BJP also tries to put the blame back on the Centre saying that it reacted late by taking 15 days to send paramilitary forces to the state.
