New Delhi: This Rakshabandhan brought a new ray of hope for Amar and his brother Surendra – two orphans who only had each other for family.
Tragedy struck their family in 1999 when their father murdered their mother and was jailed. The boys’ grandfather could only afford to take care of their sister, Renu, and so the brothers were sent to an orphanage.
But this year, they faced the threat of separation once again. Surendra, the elder of the two, will turn 18 soon and the orphanage can only keep minors.
Struggling to keep the broken family together, the brothers approached Delhi High Court. "I asked the judge where will we go after the orphanage asks us to leave?" says Surendra.
The court has transferred their father's property to them and issued a notice to the Government calling the plight of the children a violation of fundamental rights.
A Delhi-based businessman has also stepped in, offering them financial help. "This economic help - whatever it is - will go a long way in restoring the family - however fractured - back,” says Supreme Court advocate, Sadhan Ramachandran.
Across the country, thousands like them languish in such orphanages, clueless about their future.
The court order has come as a ray of hope for them. But the ball is now in the government's court to formulate a mechanism so that boys like Amar and Surrendra can live life to the fullest.
