Chennai: Former union minister Dayanidhi Maran submitted his symbolic resignation on Sunday and showed solidarity with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) over the Tamil issue in Sri Lanka.

The resignation came after Maran met the DMK chief M Karunanidhi for the first time since his exit from the union cabinet over a family rift in 2007.

Maran said, "I have handed over my resignation letter to the Chief Minister. I would also like to voice solidarity with the all the DMK MPs in raising the issue to stop the Sri Lankan Navy from killing of innocent Tamils. I think all of us are of the same view and I have full trust in the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh."

The Maran brothers have made several failed attempts to meet Karunanidhi since the family rift came out in the open in 2007.

However, even after this meeting sources within the party say there's hardly a chance for rapproachment and Karunanidhi granted the meeting only to show that the Tamil cause was bigger than the family rift.

Meanwhile, the DMK's focus is on Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Colombo.

Will the senior congress leader be able to balance between a delicate foreign policy and the ambition of an ally to emerge hero of the Tamil cause?
