New Delhi: Former Environment Minister Maneka Gandhi told CNN-IBN she knows the “real story” of Ram Singh Munda and the bear.
“I don't think you know the truth of the case. I have been involved in this case. In fact, I got this man caught. So now I am going to tell you the truth of the matter. They used poison darts, shot the mother, took the baby, kept the baby and taught it tricks. Now there's only one way you can teach a baby tricks – that’s either through beating or starvation. When I got to know about it, I sent one of my people for animal activists there. He photographed himself with the bear and the man riding a cycle. He came back informed me. I got in touch with the forest ranger who went to this man and this man bribed him to say that there was no bear. A forest ranger then tipped off this man and he immediately had the bear sold. He was caught by the wildlife activists and so was the forest ranger who had taken the bribe. After that this chap was in jail with us for one week before he would even tell us where the bear was. So don’t tell me he is innocent. He is a criminal,” she said.
Maneka also advocated the harshest punishment for Ram Singh Munda.
“There is only one way when you can take a baby from the jungle and that is when you kill the mother. What was he bringing it up for? This is the fifth case we have come across in the last one year where these tribals kill the mother, take the baby and sell it to the madaris of Mevat or it goes to Nepal. I am saying that he should get the absolute harshest sentence possible. All the tribals in Orissa are involved in animal poaching to an nth degree and this man certainly knew what he was doing, otherwise why would he bribe the forest ranger?” she told CNN-IBN.
