Kolkata:Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has formally accepted West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Battacharjees call for talks over the Singur agitation. Mamata deputed her party legislative assembly leader Partha Chatterjee, Singur Krish and Jamin Raksha Committee convenor Purnendu Bose as her representatives for the talks
She has informed the West Bengal govt that she wants the meeting to be held on Wednesday and has sought a confirmation on the time and venue. Mamata has been planning an agitation outside the Tata Motors site in Singur from Aug 24, demanding that acquired land be returned to farmers.
Meanwhile, forward bloc state General Secretary Ashok Ghosh told reporters after a two-day meeting of its state committee that both the state government and the opposition should sit with an 'open mind' to find a solution to the Singur crisis. Asked to comment on TC chief Mamata Banerjee's demand for return of 400 acre at Singur to 'unwilling' farmers, Ghosh said "We will discuss everything (at the Front)."
Referring to the veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu's turning down Banerjee's demand and suggesting she find a compromise formula so that the project could come up, Ghosh
Said, "It may be the opinion of Jyoti babu and the CPI(M), but our party thinks that a solution should be found through discussions."
He said that during review of the Left Front's poor performance in the recent panchayat elections in West Bengal, it was found that the negative impact of the state government's policy of farmland acquisition without taking the consent of farmers was responsible for it among other factors.
To another question, he said the FB which controls the agricultural marketing department wanted a bipartite talk with the CPI(M) on the entry of big business in the retail sector. The party was opposed to such entry.
