New Delhi: A former additional advocate general of the High Court Bar Association, Sanjeev Basnal, has been taken into police custody in connection with the cash for judgement scandal - one of the biggest scams involving the judiciary in Punjab and Haryana.

Bansal has been suspended by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association and is in the custody of the Chandigarh Police.

He was made one of the three accused in case, after a packet containing Rs 15 lakh was delivered to the residence of the newly appointed High court judge Nirmaljit Kaur on of August 13.

According to the complaint, Bansal’s assistant Prakash, delivered the money at Kaur’s residence and upon seeing the cash in the bag, the security guard called the judge who was in the house.

The guards then prevented Prakash from leaving and called the police who registered a case against three people, including Bansal and Prakash.

Forty-year old Bansal resigned from his post after he was booked by the police. It is believed that many top officials are involved in the scam.

The Association has called for cases to be withdrawn from judges suspected to be involved in the corruption scandal.

The Chandigarh Police are tightlipped about the source of money and the telephone calls made by Bansal.
