Tapes asking favour of cop leaked, TN minister quits

A minister in Tamil Nadu has resigned after an audio recording of her asking a policeman for a favour was released. The minister is heard telling the policeman to go slow on a corruption case involving a relative. Opposition parties in the state say now T R Baalu should also resign, because he asked the PMO for gas allotment for a family owned company.

Nalini seeks early release from jail, appeals in HC

Just a month after Priyanka Vadra met her, the last surviving member of the assassination squad that killed her father Rajiv, Nalini Sriharan has appealed to the Madras High Court for an early release. It has been 16 years, nine months and 18 days since she was arrested in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Rajiv Gandhi, India’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated by a LTTE suicide squad on May 21, 1991, while campaigning during the Lok Sabha elections in Sriperumbudur, a few kilometers from Chennai.

4 infants die after being given measles shots in TN

Four 10-month-old infants died at two primary health centres in Tamil Nadu, immediately after receiving a measles vaccine. While Chief Minister Karunanidhi has admitted that the government is responsible for the tragedy, the Central government has asked all states to suspend the use of the vaccine.

Rajinikanth in a dilemma over Hogenakkal issue

Tamil Nadu saw stray incidents of violence and a black out of Kannada channels on the issue and not just the Central Government, even Tamil cinema's superstar Rajinikanth is in a tight spot. Born in Karnataka and superstar in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth will now have to respond to Tamil cinema's call for an anti-Karnataka hunger strike on April 4. In 2002 Rajini became the target of attack after he refused to participate in the Tamil film industry's rally on the Cauvery issue.

Congress in a fix as Karnataka, TN fight

Pro-Kannada activists plan to black out Tamil TV channels and stop the screening of Tamil films in Karnataka from Wednesday to protest against their neighbouring state’s plan to move ahead with the Hogenakkal drinking water project. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a resolution demanding the Centre to protect “the rights of the Tamil people” in Karnataka. The dispute puts the Congress in a tricky position. The DMK is its ally at the Centre and it faces elections in Karnataka soon.

Is Karunanidhi-Maran patch up on the cards?

M K Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, celebrated his 56th birthday on Saturday. The big political greeting for Stalin came from his cousin Kalanidhi Maran who heads the Sun network. Sources say Kalanidhi met Karunanidhi as well, which perhaps signals a change in the political equations within DMK’s first family.
