A courageous newspaper editor, whose commitment to his home state of Maharashtra has never been in doubt was attacked last week at his home by fellow Maharashtrians. His windows were broken, his doorway was tarred and stones were hurled into... Read The Article
To begin with I liked the title " 1.2.3. Statue ". I agree with you when you say we have forgotten what the Statues staynd for . We are looking for answers to real life problems in Stones, and hence we protect them like precious diamonds.
I have one request:- God forbid, if you ever face the ire of such miscreants for voicing your heart felt views- Dont Backoff. WE need strong views and even harsher actions, if " India Shining " is to be become a reality.

Abhijit

This is the simple example of dirty politics in India. Political parties are trying to use people sentiments and gets into the power. Now a days politics is a business. They don't care dividing the people based on the language and locality & religion for their interests.. Nobody cares people.. 250 crore would be much more enough to rehabilitate the beggars in the finance capital.

Hi Sagarika, Wonderful article you have hit the nail. I am not against the Statue although but the timing is wrong Specially when there are serious issues like farmers debt, infrastructure devlopment, energy etc. You rightfully mentionedthe that the so called Shivaji followers should have shown their respect through their works. These all activities only makes a marathi manoos feel ashamed.

hi, i think the attack on an editor for it seems essentially suggesting that resources which, are not in themseleves infinite, could be better utilized than in a construction of a omnipotent statute is a great indictment of india's lack of reasoned public space; and not simply a case of lack of ideas, but this is of course imputed into and assumed kind regards to s.g.

Sagarika,
You are right. Mr Ketkar forgot about his comments can call for serious trouble in his own land. On the other hand it makes sense what he said also.
I recently met few africans, they did mention that our statues are only to build and put a garland once in a year. When i was thinking about that comment, I read your article in this blog.
We are errecting a statue to show respect and some sense of his true Godliness, which was selfless when he was serving this proud nation. If it was statue of God he will bow everytime we go infront of that. Do we do that by any chance
So, these false respect leads us to no where.....

!!!.....Statue makes Economic Sense ..... !!!
I think proposed investment of 250 Crore is justified as it will attract larger number of tourists to the spot. The statue of liberty alone attracts 4 Million tourists every year. So I am sure this statue would attract atleast 10 Million tourists. Even on average person spends about 100 Rs ( taking ferry, shopping etc. ) .. this will guarantee 100 Crores every year .. I am sure my numbers would be well below the real numbers.
Apart from this there would be movies showcasing the great warrior Shivaji which will educate and inspire the people. This tourist spot I am sure would provide employment to few hundered people.
So overall I think this development would make economic sense as well. Unlike other statues built around who no one really bothers to take a look.
Otherwise this money as suggested by Ketkar would have been used for some other form of subsidy to the people with no returns on it.

Please do not forget...this will also provide a good location for all the birds (given the size of the statue)of the world a good toilet !!!

Yes.We have a statue culture in India. No denying it. If any thing is to be represented here it is represented here as a statue of that great fellow.Even if Obama and Hillary Clinton were to contest elections here they would have to install their giant cut outs for people to recognize(and they would have to install big statues of their legendary predecessors and ensure that they are not defiled). No scope for embarrasment here if you want to win.We have living leaders here who have inaugurated statues of themselves and later demolished them as they were not suitably grand. In this land where people are dirt poor and others are bleeding by the taxes which fuel some of these statue costs. This is sign language at its evolved form in the 21st century where about 30% are not literate and the 80 percent need such symbols to see the power.

the really criminals are the one who really do henious acts in the name of protecting statues, which even they dont belive firmly...coz if they believed and followed whatever is teachings the statues taught, they would never harm anyone... i guess india is alos famous for this....

Hi,
I have read each and every comment. Article is nice..but I think we should built the statue since it will give every Indian a source of inspiration. It is easy to say that source of inspiration should be in heart and we should provide jobs and welfare to farmer but will government do this? If the government is ready to provide account for not spending money on statue and spending money for welfare of people then it should do that. But i don't think even otherwise government will spend money for other things. So let us built the statue. when our next 10-12th generation lives, at least they will see the statue and study about shivaji and his ethics and principles. also look from the perspective that if some foreigner looks at this statue from sky or visits this, he will bound to ask about statue and then some might read about shivaji. and this we can spread his importance. After all he deserve this.
