Lalit Modi, the entertainer of the year

Do you know who the best entertainer of the year is so far? No, it's not Shah Rukh Khan, and not Rakhi Sawant. He is the most unlikely, DLF Indian Premium League Commissioner Mr Lalit Modi. What an entertainment he has provided to the people through the Indian Premium League! Action, drama, comedy, emotion, music, dance, climax, everything. Absolutely superb. Entertainment came on the field as well as off it.

The first round of matches over, the IPL has now entered the second round. Many controversies have happened in the first round. Cheer girls provided entertainment in the stadium, pulling in crowd. And at the same time, the banner at Jazz By The Bay (near Churchgate station) asked for "Cheer girls in Parliament to improve attendance."

Sreesanth was seen crying bitterly on the ground because of Harbhajan's slap. The whole world saw that episode as it went live on-air across all channels, directed by the Media & The Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Then, Shane Warne had a war of words with Saurav; Vijay Mallya has removed his team CEO Charu Sharma. Now Mallya has expressed his views about Dravid also. Sharukh wants to remove few players from the squad. All the right ingredients for pure entertainment. Viewers enjoyed the controversies as well as the cricket. I'm sure there are many more controversies still in store...

Lalit Modi's idea of including the film industry was commendable. Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Raima Sen, have all brought glamour to the IPL, that no one can ignore. Artists like Hariharan, Ila Arun, Usha, and Shivamani brought their share of entertainment too.

The film industry too is feeling the heat of IPL this summer. Most producers usually release their new films in the summer because of vacations. But many multiplexes are reporting low attendance because of IPL. Ticket windows are still waiting for their audiences. Big banners like UTV & K. Sera Sera have even postponed the release of their films Aamir & Sarkar Raj respectively. Even Sharukh's own quiz show "Panchvi Pass" got low TRP compared to the IPL matches.

Lalit Modi's biggest success is that he brought 'Success' people in IPL. He organized the bid process very well. Famous personalities like Mukesh Ambani, Vijay Mallya, Shah Rukh Khan, Ness Wadia & Preity Zinta, and Rupert Murdoch got teams from the bid. All successful personalities in their respected fields, and the kind of people who bring success to any event they participate in. Of course, except for Vijay Mallya, who hasn't succeeded in the IPL till now? Pitting the big names against each other - Mukesh Ambani vs. Vijay Mallya, Shah Rukh vs. Preity Zinta - was a good idea. Shah Rukh provides laptops for the Kolkata Knight Riders, while Preity gives hugs to the Kings XI players.

Dilip Prabhavalkar, a great cricket fan, said on Marathi news channel IBN Lokmat that IPL is an event not cricket. A few cricketers too are of the same opinion. So am I. But, with all the entertainment it's providing, I can't ignore its success story and nor that of IPL commissioner Mr. Lalit Modi as the best entertainer.

It was interesting to note the comment made by one of India’s finest cricketing brain in his stint as a commentator at the IPL matches. The man in question was Ravi Shastri who rechristened the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi as Moses Modi.Sure Modi has carried out the business practice of milking the cash cow (Indian cricket) with text book precision. Nothing wrong with it, as in the competitive sporting environment that cricket survives; it was the right move so that the men who play the game could capitalize the support for the game to the fullest. Personally I support the fact that cricketers should derive the financial benefit from such endeavors, especially the young domestic cricketers, who with their participation in the revolutionary league have achieved financial stability; an important component in the life of a professional cricketer. But my biggest concern arises from the fact; is IPL big enough to encompass the entire humongous pool of aspiring cricketers from across India? The million dollar question is will the proclaimed Moses of cricket look beyond commercial considerations and personal ego to help all the domestic players reap the benefit of his revolutionary concept? City based league is a god given gift for an aspiring young cricketer %26 its benefit should pass on to one and all. For me the most heartening stories arising out of the IPL is the emergence of an Ashok Dhinda or a M.S. Ghoni. One of the leading dailies profiling the rise of Ghoni caught an interesting observation from Ghoni; he said that if it was not for Love Abhilish joining the ICL, he would have never made the cut into the Punjab Ranji team in turn not being considered for the IPL. So if Abhilish had not joined the ICL, IPL would have never seen the emergence of Ghoni. This proves the point that either the IPL has to grow in size to accommodate all the players, or the BCCI has to apporve of the ICL %26 Stanford ...Reply
