A colourless election

In spite of being so crucial, this election is colourless and the mood lackadaisical. There are no major - or even minor- issues, no personalities in any of the parties, and no ideology at all. All the talk...

Karthick Is it going to make a difference? being colorful or not? Ultimately we the people even after voting is not getting anything..They again have to go with bad roads, bad infrastructure, poor public transport system, poor traffic management, poor safety conditions....the list goes on and on.....

Archana Well I guess the elections do not seem so colourful or loud
1. due to ECs rule against excessive banners and high decibel chanting...
2. people of Karnataka realise their Governments future (at least for this term). The results will be announced, predictable will happen. Any single party will not possess the majority to form a stable government. Why be so cheerful when there is so much hope for a coalition government that will fall anyway?

CM Reddy Its pleasant surprise to see an election without buntings, posters and loudspeakers. From TN Seshan's days, every CEC is doing one extra bit to make elections less fraudulent, less bogus and more transparent. it may not be the ideal world, but certainly an inch forward.

Regarding candidates spending money.. it is true human brain is very intelligent and runs on survival instincts. So, parties as well as individual candidates have come up with innovative ( or fraudulent ) ways of duping the system / law, and carry out their illegal ways of fooling voters.
Some of the new ways..
1. Candidates give out money to local leaders to distribute end voters.. these local leaders take their cut and pass on some of the funds to end voters
2. Arranging a marriage function in one of the local leaders' family, Give gifts lavishly to the local people
3. Paying money through the religious channels
4. Giving out coupons/ money in the booklets
And so on..

Also, parties have realized one more thing, instead of giving money during the elections, they are promising lot of freebies once they come to Power.. In a way it’s a better balanced risk management approaches.

I do follow vernacular and English media ( both print and electronic) to get a sense of elections. It is unfortunate

Considering this election is a first election after delimitation, new psephologists could have born by analyzing the new dynamics - There are lot of them ..
1. new constituencies, new candidates, new caste equations, no development stories , lot of rebel candidates, more no of non-political candidates, lot of party hopping and so on...
2. Impact of SP and BSP on the election results

Unfortunately, media has oversimplified election coverage and analysis by focusing only on the visible issues rather than undercurrents or hidden issues ... Somehow, it appears that Media has decided to do only post mortem assessment of the elections.

Parag It would be better if elections can be held after every six years & if govt.collapses for whatever reasons then president rule should be immposed for all the left out period.Central govt may create a special & permanent machinary for taking care for such states with extra bureaucratic arrangements.

Prasad Shetty Yes, the election is colourless because political leaders know people of karnataka already know their various colour, so these politicans this time are colourless.
There are no issue at all in this elections because issuses are such that people know it cannot be fulfilled like free power, reservation in IT or BT, free colour TV, Subsidised rice etc.
Therefore no personalities are aggersively addressing these issues, since they know there is no ideology at all in this election.
Well all political party are betrayers, but v also know only these people can only run the state, betrayers are common in politics, people know and forget it. But JDs openly betrayed People which is still fresh. Therefore national parties have chance this time.
But these national party leaders are worried also, since they have made such unfullfilling promise and they know well that if they come to power with majority they cant fulfill the promise made.
Therefore the election is colourless

v.sriharsha Election campaigns and agendas in South are refreshingly different from the north Indian poll scenario in many ways. South India has its own dash of glamour in terms of cinestars' presence and issues which are generally development oriented. One rarely hears such positive poll issues being projected in the North Indian poll campaigns. In the North, it's more personal mudslinging and little about their development agenda. If Iam right, NTR was the trendsetter in giving a new momentum to poll campign through his chariot and talking about the pride of the Telugus. When did you hear last any North Indian leader talking about development and welfare schemes he would launch in the campaigns? Perhaps, none. Certainly, the south leaders are more focused in their priorities. Probably, this has got to do something with the levels of electorates'thinking and comprehension, which are more matured and coherent. If one looks at the campaign pitch in Andhra Pradesh, all the political parties, barring the TRS, are focussing on irrigation projects, levels of unemployment, regional disparities with develpment as the mantra. Of course, Telnagana issue occupies the centre-stage but its progress vis-a-vis the performance of earlier rulers is the theme of the campign. Karnataka too, has has its own share of woes with its neighbouring Tamil Nadu but the leaders do not come to personal attacks. Similarly is the case in Kerala. The people have already prejudged the level of competence of their leaders to whom they would vote for. Their verdict is already safely locke and that's what should worry the leaders in the fray. The splendid performance of the Congress from South after the emergency in the 1977 elections when the North voter voted against the Indira Gandhi is a refelction of the southern voter's psyche. I hope I am not treading the dangerous path of Raj Thackeray or Tejender Khanna likes by raising the North-South bogey.
